I think reading slumps are just one of the cons that come along with being such an avid reader. They usually happen when you read a lot of the same genre back to back or finish a series and can’t imagine reading anything better than what you finished. Don’t fear though! Here are a few books that are bound to get your book-loving heart up and pumping again.
1. The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
This psychological thriller will keep your attention straight from the get-go. What better way to climb your way out of a slump than to be pulled into an action-packed adventure, right?
2. CRANK by Ellen Hopkins
This is the first book in the author’s CRANK Trilogy, loosely based off of the drug abuse her own daughter faced. Ellen Hopkins’ books are written in free verse which makes for a smooth, though intriguing read because you’re dying to see what the next page brings.
3. The Last Thing I Remember by Andrew Klavan
The first book in an action packed series, follows teenager Charlie West who, when he awakens, finds himself strapped down to a chair and covered in bruises. He doesn’t remember a thing. All he knows is that he doesn’t have much time to figure it out. He’s a wanted man and they’ll stop at nothing to kill him.
4. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
This American classic set in the Roaring Twenties brings together an intriguing array of characters. Whether you’ve read it before or have never had the opportunity, it’s a story that, with each time you read it, you gain a different, perhaps deeper, perspective.
5. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Now, hear me out. Yes, this is a teenage love story but it is not the usual sappy, high school romance type(though there’s nothing wrong with that). Even if you wouldn’t consider yourself a romantic, I encourage you to pick this one up. Hazel and Gus, the main characters, are not your average teens. In fact, their medical circumstances force them to face what we all may sometimes avoid thinking about: death. I can see this one becoming a new classic in the next 20 years or so. Get your tissues ready.
Those were just a few novels to, hopefully, bring you out of your reading funk. If you stay in your slump longer than expected, don’t worry!
