Television shows often break barriers into other mediums, including comic books. Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Firefly both ventured to comic books after their shows ended. TNT’s The Librarians will follow their example, will hit shelves sometime soon. Though this won’t be the first venture for the franchise into print. The franchise started out as a trilogy of films staring Noah Wyle, with the first film receiving a novelized adaptation, and the second film adapted as a graphic novel. The films introduced fans to a man who goes to a mysterious Library to audition for a job as the Librarian. When he receives the job, he discovers magic and adventure. In 2014, The Librarians premiered as a spin-off of the films, with Wyle’s character recurring.
The series follows three new Librarians chosen by Wyle’s character Flynn Carsen, people who turned down the chance to audition for the role of the Librarian. They are brought in to monitor the Annex, and handle magical instances and artifacts while he goes in search of the Library which is lost in space. The series follows Librarians Jacob Stone, Cassandra Cillian, Ezekiel Jones, with Colonel Eve Baird as their Guardian, and Annex caretaker Jenkins.
The series has been a hit for fans. The Librarians topped the charts with its series premiere, and has only continued to entertain fans since. The show was renewed for a season 4 to air later this year.
Dynamite Entertainment teamed up with Electric Entertainment to develop The Librarians in both comics and graphic novels, featuring new adventures for the characters. Electric Entertainment CEO Dean Devlin shared, “We couldn’t be happier to partner with the artists and storytellers at Dynamite Entertainment on this series of comic books for The Librarians. This is a perfect way for our fans to follow their favorite characters as they explore new and exciting stories.”
As a fan of the show, Dynamite CEO and Publisher, Nick Barrucci shared, “I was hooked on this exciting series from the first TNT movie. Noah Wyle’s character recalls everything I love about Indiana Jones, and the cast of the series is phenomenal. The cast dynamics and premise are prefect for comic books, and I am thrilled that Dynamite Entertainment will have the opportunity to expand on this rich world in a series certain to reward longtime fans and newcomers alike!” Further information such as release dates and if the comics will tie into the fourth season has yet to be given.
