5 Books That Feed The Soul

Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out. Nice, right? I can’t think of many folks who would pass up a nice, relaxing vacation or simply some uninterrupted alone time. Unfortunately, we live in the real world where we don’t always have that luxury each time we need or want it. But guess what we do have? That’s right: books that can emotionally and mentally take us to that state of zen in whatever aspect of our lives.

1. Thrive by Arianna Huffington

Yes, Arianna Huffington as in the co-founder and Editor-In-Chief of The Huffington Post. Thrive is the kind of book that any and everyone should read because it discusses the reality of what success really means. In her book, Huffington encourages us all to rethink and revision our beliefs about being successful (a thought usually summed up with being powerful and having tons of money). Well, it’s time to update that definition!

2. The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren

I know, I know: there are thousands and thousands of self-help books out there that offer you all these ‘life formulas’ and pieces of advice to make you a brand new you. Half of those are super gimmicky and say the exact same thing. The Purpose Driven Life, however, is authentic in its guidance. It includes Christian wisdom about every topic and issue in the book including self-image, guilt, lack of direction, worthlessness, and just about any other emotion you can think of. Even if you’re not necessarily religious, this book could work wonders for you in terms of helping you figure things out.

3. The Defining Decade by Meg Jay

This title may appear to be slightly daunting and intimidating though hear me out: The Defining Decade talks about the importance of taking action and making wise choices in your 20’s. You don’t have to have every little detail about your life figured out, (who ever has every minor detail in their life perfectly in place) though it wouldn’t hurt to start creating stable emotional, financial, professional, and social foundations before you start to grow some gray.

4. Wildflower by Drew Barrymore

Wildflower is actress Drew Barrymore’s literary reflection on her years starting out in Hollywood as a child star (she was so cute in E.T.), her serious dance with drug and alcohol addiction, and her recovery and transition into loving herself and becoming a mother. An authentic and inspirational read for women, especially.

5. Kisses from Katie by Katie Davis

This story takes giving back to a completely deeper, and loving level. Katie Davis was just an ordinary teenager about to attend college in the upcoming fall. However, during her summer trip to Uganda, she decides that college is not the path that’s for her after all. In this touching true story, you can’t help but feel waves of gratitude, love, and happiness overwhelm you as you read.
