Now there is no time limit here and you can start anywhere on the list so don’t feel overwhelmed – this list is guaranteed to get you reading new genres and authors and help you reignite your literary passion.
1. A Graphic Novel
If you’ve never read a graphic novel before you’re missing out! For first timers, we recommend Smile by Raina Telgemeier (check out our review, here) or Blue is the Warmest Color by Julie Maroh.
2. Book Set in Space
Yes, that’s right – in space. Even if you are not a sci-fi fan, grab a book that’s set somewhere else in the galaxy and lose yourself in the cosmos. Hot choices are The Martian by Andy Weir or for something a little more classic try Friday by Robert Heinlein. If you’re feeling extra into space, consider giving these space photography books a try.
3. A Book Recommended By A Close Friend
Phone, text, Skype, or send a carrier pigeon to your BFF and ask them to recommend a book they like that you will love – if they know you well enough you can be sure they’ll suggest an awesome read.
4. A Book Of Poetry
Don’t let poetry die – get out of your chair, proceed directly to the closest bookstore and support poets by grabbing one (or a few!) of their books. There are tons of incredible poets out there, but if you don’t know where to start, look at works by Wendy Cope, Leonard Cohen, Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath or Robin Coste Lewis.
5. A Book That Was Made Into A Movie
Books are always better than the movies, right? Of course! Why not try a book by Thomas Harris such as Red Dragon or Hannibal (these are un-put-down-able) or Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.
6. A Book Completely Outside Your Usual Genres
You know what we’re talking about! Never read historical fiction? Maybe you’ve been reading serious books a bit too much and you need a humorous book – try Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy or Spike Milligan’s Puckoon for some unique laughs.
7. A Self-Improvement Book
There is always room for improvement – look around and find a book that addresses something you’d like to get better at.
8. A Book Under 150 Pages
Bonus points if you finish it in one day! Recommendation: Snow by Maxence Fermine (112 pages)
9. A Book By A Local Author
Support local authors and help them get noticed.
10. Any Pulitzer Prize Winning Book
This year’s winner for fiction was The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen.
11. A Children’s Book
Again so many amazing stories to choose from – maybe try an author you loved as a child.
12. A Book About Survival Or Motivation
Be blown away – and inspired!
13. A Book Of Short Stories
Warning: One short story may lead to another.
14. A Book That Was Previously Banned

15. A Book That Was Written More Than 100 Years Ago

Happy reading!
