Let’s just get down to the nitty gritty of it: sometimes life just sucks. There’s a lot that we can’t control including the way people treat us at work, school, or in general and it’s completely normal to feel totally at a loss and flustered with what surrounds us. The good news is: we have books. Sure, that may sound painfully simple, though look at it this way: books provide an escape for us when we can see no possible one. They allow us to view life through the lenses of characters we will never physically meet, yet feel undeniably connected to spiritually. All because of words on paper. So, in homage to our cherished writings, I hope these books offer you some healing, hope, and inspiration for whatever you may be enduring. Therapy is great, though books are cheaper!
1. Deep Wounds Deep Healing: An Introduction to Deep Level Healing by Charles H. Kraft
This one dives right into the healing power that we possess that we may not even be acutely aware of. Maybe it’s not a superhuman ‘heal my physical wounds’ type of power, though the deepest scars that humans often have are emotional and mental, rather than physical. True healing begins with facing what has caused us unbearable pain, accepting it, and taking the steps to forgive ourselves and those who have harmed us.
2. You Can Heal Your Life by Louise L. Hay
I think, especially when you don’t have the highest self-esteem in the world, it’s so easy to focus on your flaws and shortcomings. The negative experiences begin to take over and you’re left at a standstill with your emotions, unable to access them because everything is overwhelming. To get back in touch with yourself on a spiritual level it’s important that we recognize the power we do have over our lives. We may not be able to control every thing that happens, though we can choose how we react and how we can use our pain to motivate and encourage ourselves and others.
3. The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself by Michael A. Singer
Remarkable is a word that does not do this book enough justice. I read it about two years ago and it provided such an insight on life that I never really considered before. The author encourages readers to really address and think through situations from the point of view of this truth: we really do have more control than we think. Not over our circumstances, though how we allow those circumstances and energies to affect our spiritual energies. I wouldn’t say that this is so much a ‘live your life this way’ type of self-help book because it so much more than that. The Untethered Soul is more of a ‘this is your life, try and see this and that through a different perspective because it’ll drain your energy less’ type of guide book.
4. The Surrender Experiment: My Journey into Life’s Perfection by Michael A. Singer
Another great one by Michael A. Singer. The Surrender Experiment tackles everything about learning to let go of having control over everything and simply trusting fate and what’s meant to be. Whether you believe in any sort of higher power or not, this book is very spiritually, emotionally, and mentally therapeutic as its contents and advice offer such a practical, yet liberal way of living each day the best one can.
5. Falling Into Grace: Insights on the End of Suffering by Adyashanti
Not one of us will be able to get through this life unscathed by unbearable heartbreak, the death of a loved one, or other unfair, disheartening life occurrences. To say that that’s just life seems too detached and unsympathetic to me so I’d rather say that even though we don’t know how things will turn out, if we’ll be gone today or tomorrow, we need to take responsibility for how we treat and love the people we are blessed to have around us. Suffering and pain will come. They are both inevitable, though it is our pain that creates the stepping stones for us to gain new strength, hope, and perseverance for the days ahead of us.
6. A Deep Breath of Life by Alan Cohen
This world is one of much chaos and is rarely filled up to the brim with silence. As an introvert especially, I love solitude and partaking in activities such as taking a walk by myself at a local park or curling up with a book on a Friday night. No matter what your personality type, I believe it’s a great idea to just take time everyday, whether it be even just 10 minutes, and simply be. We could all learn to be in the moment a little more rather than always being up and going.
7. The Way of Liberation by Adyashanti
What does true freedom mean to you? When you read the word: freedom, what comes to mind? Patriotism for your country, freedom of being able to embrace who you are? Freedom to love who you want to love? Freedom, likewise with the word love, can be a symbol of multiple things for us. So, just as with being able to give and receive as much love as we can, we should embrace as much freedom as we can. Life was not meant to be lived under any kind of oppression or chains of any kind.
