Preparing for a new baby is ridiculously exciting… for the most part. Unfortunately, it can also be ridiculously stressful for older siblings-to-be. Here are a few books to make that transition easier–and maybe even a bit fun–for your other small children!
1. You Were the First by Patricia MacLachlan and Stephanie Graegin
This book serves as a comforting reminder to your firstborn that they have a unique bond that no one will ever have; they were the first of all of your “firsts.” You’ll be able to give them a sense of importance that’ll be helpful when little brother or sister is consuming most of your time.
2. The New Baby by Mercer Mayer
Part of Mayer’s Little Critter series, this book offers a realistic picture of what life with a new baby will look like (i.e., the baby’s not going to do much right away) and how an older sibling can get involved.
3. The Berenstain Bears’ New Baby by Stan and Jan Berenstain
This one will take you back through the years in Bear Country, back to when Sister Bear was on the way. Join Brother as he learns what to expect when his new sister arrives.
4. Peter’s Chair by Ezra Jack Keats
Peter becomes upset when things begin to change in preparation for his baby sister to arrive. He stakes his claim on his old toddler chair, hiding it from his parents so it won’t be painted pink for the baby, only to discover that he’s outgrown it anyway.
5. Babies Don’t Eat Pizza: A Big Kids’ Book about Baby Brothers and Baby Sisters by Dianne Danzig and Debbie Tilley
This lengthy book offers a humorous, approachable, and honest look at what life with a new sibling will look like. It’s divided by topic and covers everything from the trip to the hospital to new baby’s toddlerhood.
With these books at hand, you should be able to prepare your children for a smooth transition into life with a new sibling!
