10 Skin-Crawling Questions Bookworms Hate To Answer

As bookworms, we get it. Not everyone else in the world likes to read. In fact, according to the latest Pew Research Center survey, 26% of Americans did not read a single book in the last year, a number that hasn’t widely changed since 2012.

With the average reader completing about 4 books per year, anyone who reads more seems to be a mystical unicorn in a land piling full of movies and TV shows. Yet, bookworms aren’t odd. We don’t live in a different world, nor do we (always) count down the seconds until we can get back to our novels.

Actually, a pretty significant number of Americans read (73% read a book in the last 12 months).

However, there are some questions that, while often pop up as a result of harmless small talk, are simply irk-worthy and sure to make a bookworm’s skin crawl. Questions that always seem to come up, no matter the setting. Questions that every reader has had to (unwillingly) answer at some point in their lives. Here are the 10 most annoying questions that bookworms hate to answer:

1. How Many Books Do You Have?

Seriously, we don’t know. We don’t go home each night to count our books. We’re not entirely obsessive.

2. Why Do You Read So Much?

Because we like to, duh. Get over it. Why do you like to watch a bunch of grown men throw around a football and jump onto each other in a big sweaty pile?

3. How Do You Find Time To Read?

Simple. We make time. Life is all about priorities, and if you want to do something, if it’s important enough to you, you will make time in your life for it, no matter how busy you are.

4. Haven’t You Already Read That Book?

Yeah, so? I bet you’ve seen the same movie multiple times too, haven’t you?

5. Why Do You Keep Buying Books If You Haven’t Read All The Ones You Have?

Because new, amazing books are released each day. We don’t buy every book we see, just the copies that are the most enjoyable to us.

6. Don’t You Have Anything Better To Do Than Read All The Time?

Maybe reading is the ‘better thing’ to do. We enjoy it, move on.

7. Are You A Loner? Don’t You Like People?

Well, these questions are certainly making me like people less and less. Seriously, reading doesn’t make you a loner. Bookworms have friends too.

8. Were You A Nerd In School?

Perhaps I was, but that does not mean that all readers are nerds. Not all people who have played a game of basketball, baseball, or football last year were all-star pros, were they?

9. Do You Hate Watching TV?

Spending enjoyable time with our nose in a book does not mean we don’t also like to do other things. We can read a book, then binge-watch Netflix just like anyone else.

10. How Much Money Have You Spent On Books?

We don’t know. The absolute worst thing anyone could think about is how much money they spend on their hobbies. Leave money out of it. We don’t ask you why you spend your money on the latest iPhone or newest clothing fad.
