5 Enduring Board Books To Gift At Baby Showers

Baby showers make an excellent opportunity to inspire new bibliophiles. Long after onesies are outgrown and diapers are disposed of, books will endure, pulled out and read time and again.

Some of my favorite gifts as a new mom were books for my children’s library. Of course, we all love Margaret Wise Brown and Eric Carle as evidenced by the three copies each of Goodnight Moon and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? we received as shower gifts. If you want more original and less often gifted board books, here are five that are sure to stand the test of time.

1. Boynton Gift Set: 30th Anniversary Edition

Sandra Boynton’s infectious and hilarious board books keep children and adults smiling. By far my two favorites are Not the Hippopotamus and The Going to Bed Book, and this set includes both. I have each memorized from hours of rocking and reading. If your gift creates a new Boynton fan, her vast selection of titles will keep them reading for years to come.

2. Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle and Jill McElmurry

Little Blue’s tale of friendship and redemption provides a moral story parents will love while the fun illustrations and creative rhyme keep kids entertained. My five-year old still loves to read Little Blue Truck. This alone is a welcome gift for any new parent, but I especially love to give this with a transportation themed feeding set.

3. Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow

Who doesn’t love Five Little Monkeys? They are adorable and silly. Babies love the cheerful images and repetitive prose. Christelow continued her monkeys’ story with a series of books including: Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree, Five Little Monkeys Reading in Bed, and many more.

4. Gossie by Olivier Dunrea

Gossie loves her red boots. This book takes us along on a hunt for Gossie’s missing boots and the sweet friendship she discovers. This simple yet brilliant story captivates young minds. Gossie’s adventures continue in other books by Dunrea. This makes a fun gift paired with a ducky themed baby bath set.

5. Big Little by Leslie Patricelli

Each page of Big Little has a bright background color and her signature goofy baby comparing objects of contrasting sizes. My kids loved this baby. Patricelli captures topics kids love. Her other board books feature the same goofy baby with hilarious subjects like Toot, Potty, and Tubby. These books are sure to be a hit for both parent and child.
