Harry Potter And The Cursed Child Hits Sales Milestone

It’s been nearly two decades since J.K. Rowling first introduced us to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but it looks like Rowling’s spell is still going strong. Scholastic has announced that Harry Potter & The Cursed Child has sold more than 3.3 million copies. Scholastic originally printed 4.5 million copies of the Cursed ChildThe book, which is really a script for Rowling’s play, sold more than 2 million copies in it’s first two days and has made several best seller lists.

Cursed Child is the first and only book in the series that wasn’t written by Rowling. The British author certainly had a hand in developing the story, but the script was written by John Tiffany and Jack Thorne. Some readers might have been wary of Rowling handing the reigns off to someone else, though that hasn’t slowed down sales numbers. Cursed Child is currently number one on Amazon’s US, UK and Canadian sites. Cursed Child was marketed as a continuation of the original Harry Potter series and has led to an increase in sales of those books as well.

Given the success of the printed version, it should come as no surprise that the actual play has done well. Tickets to the show’s original run immediately sold out. The producers announced that there would be additional showings in May of 2017. The 250,000 tickets to those showings sold out within a matter of hours. The play is currently only showing in London, but producer Sonia Friedman is hopeful that they’ll eventually be on Broadway.

“Our only immediate objective was to get to today, but Colin and I said that next week we’re going to sit down, have a cappuccino and start talking about what’s next. Of course, it would be disingenuous to think New York and Broadway weren’t part of our thinking.”

Growing up, I was a huge fan of Harry Potter so it’s great to see the series is still going strong. Between Cursed Child and Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, this is looking like a great year for fans of Harry’s wizarding world.
