Persephone Books: Your New Not So Guilty Pleasure

Back when I had time to read books and blog about them, I came across a publisher and bookstore based in London with the most beautiful, elegant books. I’ll be honest,  I was first drawn in by the lovely gray covers, vintage end papers, and matching bookmarks. After I admired the beautiful aesthetics of the books, I started to read what all the fuss was about. Persephone Books takes forgotten books crafted by women, mostly, in the 20th century and revives them for our pleasure. Based out of London, their bookstore is just as charming as the stories they bring back to life. Currently offering 117 books, do yourself, or your book loving partner, a favor and simply set up an account to have one book delivered every month to your door!

Persephone Books are special in that they aren’t “fluff” yet they are incredibly readable in short stints of time or all in one sitting. The variety of books will surely appeal to most readers, however, each book has sophisticated language and prose that is lyrical with themes that touch on women’s issues that are still relevant today: gender roles, motherhood, marriage, friendship, and much more. Below are my recommendations to get you started on your new addiction.

1. The Homemaker by Dorothy Canfield Fisher

A wonderful tale of a husband and wife facing marital disaster until a suicide attempt changes the future for the entire family.

2. Miss Buncle’s Book by DE Stevenson

The first book in an addicting series, Stevenson weaves a tale of an entire village as seen through Miss Buncle’s eyes. Once her tell all book is published, the lives of those we have come to know are changed forever.

3. It’s Hard to Be Hip Over Thirty by Judith Viorst

A collection of poems that are sure to have you laughing out loud and buying more copies to gift to all your girlfriends. Set aside a few hours to indulge as this one is, especially, hard to put down.
